Rough Riders to Host Independence Cup

Plainview, NY (June 25, 2010) - The Long Island Rough Riders will be hosting the 4th Annual Independence Cup at the beautiful Bethpage State Park Polo Fields on Saturday June 26th. The tournament has been sold out for the past three years and the Rough Riders are looking forward to another successful event. The U-12 age bracket has been included for the first time this year.

Bethpage State Park is one of the most famous parks in the state. It contains tennis courts, picnic and recreational areas, a polo field, and five golf courses, including the Bethpage Black Course, which hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open Golf Championships. Opened in 1932, it has served the community as a place to host all types of events, from family picnics to major sports tournaments.

The park’s polo fields will be converted for soccer this weekend, a transition that has received rave reviews in the past.

“The pitch was exceptional, no matter which area you played on,” said Bill Franko, coach of the Farmingdale Wildfire. “There was plenty of room for spectators during the game, and ample space to set up a tent for the team to relax between games.”

The tournament features participants from U-7 to U-12 age levels. Each team plays a minimum of three games, and field sizes are adjusted to better suit player development. Rough Rider staff places teams in brackets based on ability levels in order to ensure fair competition. Team trophies are awarded to first and second place finishers; all teams that do not place in the U-7, U-8, and U-9 divisions will receive participation awards.

“The most important aspect of the tournament was my entire team had fun and wants to come back this year,” said Ed Williamson, coach of the Dix Hills Fire. “It is just a great experience overall.”

The event begins in the morning and ends before dark. Whereas most tournaments last two to three days, the Independence Cup is on Saturday only, allowing players the opportunity to relax on Sunday.

“We are proud to host one of Long Island’s premier youth soccer tournaments,” said Tournament Director Meghan Frey. “It’s great to know that players and parents alike can enjoy a fun-filled Saturday of soccer.”

Fans and players can spend the whole day at the park, as it features a large spectator area and a full concession stand. Bagels, burgers, hotdogs, chicken sandwiches, and all types of snacks and beverages will be available for purchase. Bring chairs, tents, and the whole family to enjoy a fun day of soccer!
